Happy 2012! I feel like this year is a year for doing everything you love. Just, for one year, forget about 'money' and 'careers', the future and the past, the things i 'should be' or 'should have' done... and get on with hobbies and crafts I let fall to the sideline because I had worried about all these things for the past two years.

Yesterday, I went to a dance class which I probably looked ridiculous doing, mostly because I had no idea what was going on and how to keep up. I was flailing about the floor definitely not doing what the teacher was showing us but even though I was probably being laughed at I just did it, laughed at myself and got on with it... and it felt good! I think this is the attitude to take with most things in life. If you enjoy doing it, it doesn't really matter if you're rubbish or not... and if you are, when you keep doing it you're only going to get better, so who cares anyway! And if people are judging you, then that's their sad little problem... ;)

So with that... as part of this year's resolutions I'm going to carry on drawing, doing drawings, doesn't matter if it leads to anything... continue to look for part-time jobs and anything I can do that is involved in a career path that I love (i.e. the arts...). I don't give a shit if everyone is looking for creative careers, finally forgetting about the small-minded world of art school, at least I can go out there with a slightly naive but optimistic attitude.

Starting to post some of the research & development behind my comic concept which is a fiction featuring a little history of the whaling industry in Scotland. Here's some observational sketches to try to capture the general shape and movements of whales... I've been watching the show Ocean Giants to get inspiration, visiting the Discovery ship in Dundee and also the McManus museum... I want the reader to sympathise with the whale as well as the main human characters...

I'm no writer, which is one of the challenges of this whole project. I can easily come up with a starting idea but constructing a story is difficult!

Another test nebula painting. This time, going for a more stylized look, I doubled the layer of the original painting and played around with filter effects in photoshop until I got a texture I liked to lay over the top of it to give it an edge... I really like the result.

I'm working on this character called 'faceless surgeon' for an outside project (i.e. not my ideas...). But so far I think my painting isn't up to scratch with the sketches. I mean, I really wanted to create a sensation of skin, but it's not in my ability so far (from off the top of my head), and after doing a little research to find images I could use such as burned/mangled/skin grafted faces.... well, I chickened out. When I'm not feeling so sqeemish I will get back to it.... coz right now the painting looks good in some places but the face lets it down big tiiiime. imo. and I'm not telling what that knife is he's wielding... yet. hohoho

I downloaded artrage ages ago and this is my first try using it properly.... and I absolutely love it. The paint effects have a yummy realistic texture, and it also has a great blending tool (not to mention you can swivel and move the brush nicely with the tablet, and moving around the paint causes it to blend too.... like real paint). I still haven't got the hang of all the tools so my first try is a rubbish painting of a photo of a bird in the snow. But that doesn't matter because playing around with artrage is so so so fun. :D I just wanted to gush excitedly about it.

But for its control and editing, Photoshop is still essential for me... artrage just gives me my paint fix without the mess. ;)

Due some tweaks but... I might leave it colourless because I kinda like this incredibly messy pencil mess. Colouring is incredibly time consuming... and... becoming less and less fluid... and... looks muddled, to me... Also, the guy's face is too cartoony in the previous pages, the panels are too spaced out... so I'm going back to fix em anyway... and for time's sake... might just stick to colourless... :(

Yay for bad photos of art! (it's a painting.... acrylic/gouache bits and bobs mainly, because it's cool to recycle)

...basically I wanted to work on my illustrating technique a bit further and see what came of it. I was meant to be reflecting on the role of anthropomorphism in fairy tales, while exploring different ways to draw the figure (...kinda, hah) but I didn't take it too far. Too ambitious. Too confused. But it's the start of something I want to continue looking at without a deadline looming over my head making me dislike things. :|

See, the colours really are different!
It's not really creative... That's what happens when you put an essay deadline on the same day as a project deadline. I maybe, if I had more time, would have worked on the figure more to make it less cartoony and boring. (but then that's the point, he's a stock broker) --it's also printer-unfriendly, as I've just discovered.
Stupid essay.
Mine was 90% babbling, but Grant Morrison was so fun to research, even though the research totally overwhelmed me and if I hadn't had to look up every single thing he talked about, or the several long interviews in order to piece together how the heck he comes up with this stuff, I would've had more time to actually write the darn thing. But I know for definite, if I did do the virtual community one which would have been easy - I might've written it all just as bad out of sheer boredom.

Oh dear lord... okay well got to get this over with. One sort of mock up here... Trying to improve my man-drawing skills. Not going very well, but looking back at life drawings helps. I find it so hard to draw faces, and thinking about it more now is making drawing them hell for me. As in I used to not worry what I was putting out there, but now I notice HOW MUCH THEY LOOK THE SAME because I have been being lazy and not making effort to make them look original. I think it just comes out of being afraid of making mistakes. But anyway if I do go back to this concept I'll probably work on loosening up the features a bit more (well the drawing in general - might redo the whole mock before deadline /if I'm not lazy/). Background is some sort of colourful mess of crap. But concept, idea, concept. I'm done.

I don't know why I draw the suit too big for the guy. I think I'm confused.

This is pretty much the only image I had done specifically for D-con because I really wanted to have a more pulled-together and organised set of work on display (which didn't happen, it was a bunch of my old embarrassing stuff that I'd thrown together in the end). But no time with uni work and those bad time management skills of mine. I'll know better when I do it again... and I definitely would consider it. I based the image on a loose knowledge of japanese folklore because I had no ideas in my head at the time but yeah... it's not a pokemon!!

A few screenshots from the finished website... I think I maybe could've done more with it because it seems so little now, but I spent a lot of time drawing and drafting up ideas that this is as much as I had time for. Going down the cutesy cartoony route because drawing in flash has grown on me, mmm shiney vector lines! Now I'm looking forward to using Flash again... :) Maybe be a little more adventurous next time.

Well, I lie, because it was fun, but I sortof made a shit of it. :| I love printmaking because it's so hands on and unpredictable! I did something you should never ever do, I directly copied a picture out of a magazine... then I started to do stuff to it... like be surreal or something stupid like that. In the end I was just trying too hard. Trying too hard at something usually makes things a mess. Prints in order of progress...

No hair. I gave the girl in the photo I friggin copied >_< a crocodile head because I probably didn't like her. Or... I'm going a little crazy.

Slightly better. Croc-lady is being more discreet now.
(there were mainly bad prints in-between these)

Final print. Ooh, look at that acid bite. Makes it really murky... but I kinda have a thing for murky anyway... She's probably hoping to ask him to dinner afterwards mmm manflesh.

...Wow. It just dawned on me that I have a scanner. Right next to me. Perfectly in my reach to use whenever I want instead of sneaking in to art college and sneakily scanning something and then sneaking away from the computer again unnoticed... ha, I can use it whenever I want! I ignored it for so long, I've been so used to not having one. And some people, my parents especially, probably don't even know that I actually really have a sketchbook because I don't bring them everywhere I go, so here's a few pages for you! They're a bit basic because these are from earlier on in the year but I kinda like... my current sketchbook is being crappy and I want to hide it.
